I live in a major city where people abandon textiles all the time. I love to rescue them and re-purpose them, but I’ve had a hard time getting chemical smells out of fabrics.
I read that fabric softener binds to the fibers via fat, so it’s almost impossible to get the smell out. I’m hyper sensitive to these chemicals, and can barely be in the same room with mothball or fabric softener smells.
I’ve tried soaking the fabrics in vinegar and baking soda (I like to use natural methods when possible) but even with that, sometimes the smell doesn’t budge. I’m also soaked them in hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, which does a little better, but it takes multiple soakings to reduce the smell.
If anyone has an easier way to remove these smells, it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
